Remarks by William O’Keefe at The Annual Meeting Of The Society Of Environmental Journalists on September 30, 2005.
Over the past 30 years, we have experienced continuous improvements in environmental quality and steady increases in resources committed to the environment, independent of who held the White House. There is a simple reason why. I believe that politicians understand that there is a strong commitment to continuous improvement. This has produced an implicit compact between the public and government. As long as the government honors the compact, the public doesn’t pay a lot of attention to environmental issues at the national level. It has been a long time since environmental issues have been a high priority on the public’s agenda.
