Reading Ross Gelbspan’s new book Boiling Point: How Politicians, Big Oil and Coal, Journalists, and Activists Have Fueled the Climate Crisis—and What We Can Do to Avert Disaster reminded us of the old saw: Everyone in the world is crazy except you and me, and I’m not sure about you. Well, Gelbspan is sure: everyone in the world, or at least in the U.S., is crazy—except him. We are all hiding our heads in the sand, while the world is collapsing around us. In his preface, Gelbspan states:
While people in the United States still debate the long-resolved question of whether human-induced climate change is occurring, the overriding challenge for a writer is how honestly and openly to address the real question: Is it already too late to salvage a coherent future?
Last we checked, most climate scientists were not predicting the end of either the world or Western civilization.
